OUR STORY
Battalion Apparel was born from Austen’s deep-rooted love for early American history—a passion that began the moment he first heard the crack of rope-tension drums echo through the air at a small-town parade. That performance came from the Lewis and Clark Fife and Drum Corps, a youth ensemble dedicated to preserving the martial music traditions of the 18th century. Captivated by the stirring sound and historic uniforms, Austen joined the corps shortly after, beginning his journey with the drum before picking up the fife. What started as curiosity quickly grew into a calling.

His involvement with the Lewis and Clark Corps opened the door to the broader world of reenacting. Weekend performances turned into summer events, and local parades gave way to full-scale Revolutionary War encampments. One of the most impactful sites in Austen’s early life was Fort de Chartres, a historic French fort in Southern Illinois just forty miles south of his hometown. There, surrounded by stone walls and cannon smoke, history came alive in a way that would never leave him.

That passion only deepened with time. Austen eventually became the Drum Major of Great River Fifes & Drums, an adult Fife and Drum Corps from Madison County Illinois, continuing to share the spirit of martial music across the country. His travels to historic sites, from colonial strongholds to battlefield memorials, shaped his appreciation for the architecture, stories, and sacrifices tied to these sacred places. Out of this experience, the vision for Battalion Apparel took shape—a brand that would celebrate America’s early history through timeless, comfortable clothing.
